How we source E90 parts
Stripped from accident-damaged BMW cars, then tested
- Over 15 years stripping accident-damaged vehicles for used parts.
- Removed carefully and tested before a part is sold, so you're not paying for something that doesn't work.
- Matched to your car — send the year, engine and VIN if you have it, and we'll check it's the right part.
Parts for the E90 3 Series
The E90 is the fifth-generation 3 Series sedan. It went on sale in South Africa in May 2005, was built at BMW's Rosslyn plant outside Pretoria, and picked up the local nickname "Tweezer". The wider family also includes the E91 Touring, E92 Coupé and E93 Convertible, and a Coupé or Convertible does not share its doors with a sedan, so tell us the body as well as the engine.
Why the year matters on an E90
The engine line-up changed several times. Cars.co.za's E90 buyer's guide lists the SA sedans: 320i, 320d, 323i, 325i, 330i and 330d petrol and diesel models, the 335i from June 2007, and the M3 from March 2008, which used a 4.0-litre V8 rather than the six-cylinder of earlier M3s. With the 2010 update the 335i switched from the twin-turbo N54 to the single-turbo N55. A 2008 335i and a 2011 335i therefore have different engines, so the year decides which part we look for.
What usually fails
The same guide names an oil-filter housing leak as a known issue on the N-series engines, which covers every E90 engine except the M3's. Oil from the failing gasket can land on the serpentine belt; if the belt degrades and comes off, fragments can be drawn into the engine and cause major damage. Fix the gasket early and check the belt when you do.
On the pre-facelift 335i (N54), the guide reports failures of the high-pressure fuel pump, piezo fuel injectors and turbo wastegates. Our BMW fuel injection guide covers that system in more detail. Timing-chain trouble on the pre-facelift 320d's N47 engine is reported too, though the guide notes it appears less common in South Africa than overseas.
For parts specific to the V8 M3, see our M3 parts page.

FAQ
BMW E90 parts questions
Is the BMW E90 reliable?
It depends on the engine and how the car was looked after. Cars.co.za's E90 buyer's guide says some owners report years of trouble-free service while others have bad experiences. The known issues it lists are oil-filter housing leaks on the N-series engines (all except the M3's V8), fuel pump, injector and wastegate failures on the pre-facelift 335i's N54 engine, and timing-chain trouble on the pre-facelift 320d, which it says is less common in South Africa than overseas.
