How we source E46 parts

Stripped from accident-damaged BMW cars, then tested

  • Over 15 years stripping accident-damaged vehicles for used parts.
  • Removed carefully and tested before a part is sold, so you're not paying for something that doesn't work.
  • Matched to your car — send the year, engine and VIN if you have it, and we'll check it's the right part.

Parts for the E46 3 Series

The E46 is the fourth-generation BMW 3 Series, built from December 1997 to November 2006. Many of the ones still on Pretoria roads were made close by: BMW's Rosslyn plant built 269,810 of them between 1997 and 2004, and South Africans nicknamed this generation the "G-String" after the design of its steering wheel.

That local history matters when you need a part. The E46 was sold here as a sedan, a Touring, a Coupé, a Convertible and the shorter Compact, with engines from the 318i to the 330d. Doors are specific to the body style, so tell us which one you drive as well as the engine.

What usually gets replaced

Cooling parts come up again and again. Cars.co.za's E46 buyer's guide says E46 cooling systems fail regularly, mainly because their plastic components become brittle with age. If one plastic cooling part has cracked, the others on the car are the same age, so it is worth checking them while the car is apart. Our BMW cooling system guide covers the system in more detail.

If you are replacing a whole six-cylinder engine in a 325i or 330i, tell us the year so we match the right unit.

The M3 is its own story. The same buyer's guide lists VANOS solenoids and seals, connecting-rod bearings and, on SMG cars, the gearbox hydraulic pump as the known weak points. We cover those on our M3 parts page.

What to send with your request

Send the year, the badge on the boot (318i, 320d, 330Ci and so on), the body style and the part. If you have the VIN from your registration certificate, add it: it lets us confirm the exact build of your car before we quote, which matters on a model that was revised mid-life (BMW South Africa updated the Coupé, Convertible and Compact in 2003).

FAQ

BMW E46 parts questions

Is the BMW E46 a reliable car?

The weak spot most owners meet is the cooling system. Cars.co.za's E46 buyer's guide says E46 cooling systems fail regularly, mainly because their plastic parts become brittle with age. On an older E46, inspect the plastic cooling parts and replace cracked ones before they let go. On the M3, the same guide adds VANOS parts, connecting-rod bearings and the SMG hydraulic pump.
