Parts for the E36 3 Series
The E36 is the third-generation 3 Series, built from 1990 to 2000. BMW South Africa built it at Rosslyn from 1992 to 1997, and locals nicknamed it the "Dolphin". It was the first 3 Series offered as a four-door from launch, and in 1993 the 316i won the Wesbank/SA Guild of Motoring Journalists Car of the Year.
One generation, many shapes
Worldwide the E36 came as a sedan, Coupé, Convertible, Touring and a three-door Compact hatchback. The Compact is a three-door hatchback and the Coupé and Convertible have two doors, so doors and rear body parts are not shared with the sedan. The first official M3 in SA
Cars.co.za points out that South Africans had to wait until the early 1990s and the E36 M3 Coupé for their first official taste of BMW's M3, which is why the earlier 325iS and 333i specials mattered so much here. If yours is an M3, say so up front and see our M3 parts page.
The everyday cars
Cars.co.za also credits the E36 316i with starting the compact executive segment in South Africa, and the four-cylinder sedans were built at Rosslyn alongside the six-cylinder cars.
