Introduction
The BMW E39 is a mid-size luxury sedan that was sold from 1995 to 2003. It is part of the 5 Series range, and is the successor to the BMW E34. It was launched with the M52 straight-six engine, and the range was later expanded to include the M62 V8 and the diesel M47 straight-four. The E39 was the first 5 Series to use aluminium construction for the front suspension and front subframe, and was also the first 5 Series to be available with a six-speed manual transmission. Engine and Gearbox
The BMW E39 was initially equipped with the M52 straight-six engine, but later models featured the M62 V8 and the M47 diesel straight-four. The M62 V8 was the first V8 engine to be used in a 5 Series, offering improved performance and fuel economy compared to the M52. The six-speed manual transmission was another innovation, offering improved performance and fuel economy over the five-speed manual.
Design & Accessories
The E39 was designed by Joji Nagashima, and featured a more aerodynamic, modern design than its predecessor. The interior was also upgraded with higher quality materials and improved ergonomics. The E39 was also available with a range of optional accessories, such as xenon headlights, a navigation system, and a sunroof.
Suspension
The E39 was the first 5 Series to use aluminium construction for the front suspension and front subframe. This allowed for improved handling, as well as improved ride comfort. The E39 also featured a double-wishbone rear suspension, which further improved handling.
Successor
