Introduction
The BMW E28 is a range of executive cars that BMW produced from 1982 to 1988. The models featured a range of inline-four and inline-six engines, and all models came equipped with a 4-speed automatic transmission. The E28 was the first BMW 5 Series model to be produced with an automatic transmission and the first 5 Series to feature an ABS.
Engine and Gearbox
The BMW E28 was powered by a range of petrol and diesel engines, ranging from a 1.8L inline-four to a 3.5L inline-six. Depending on the model, the machines were mated to a 4-speed automatic transmission or a 5-speed manual transmission. The E28 was also the first 5 Series model to feature an ABS, and it had a range of electronic systems, such as electronic climate control.
Design & Accessories
The E28 was designed with a timeless style and featured classic BMW design cues, such as the kidney grille, circular headlights, and curved body lines. The interior featured leather upholstery and electronic instrumentation, and the E28 also featured a range of accessories, such as power windows, power seats, and a moonroof.
Suspension
The E28 was equipped with a MacPherson strut suspension system at the front and a semi-trailing arm suspension system at the rear. The suspension system was designed to provide a comfortable ride while still providing a sporty driving experience. The E28 also featured a self-leveling rear suspension system designed to keep the car at a constant ride height, regardless of the load.
Successor
The E28 was succeeded by the E34, produced from 1988 to 1995. The E34 featured a range of improvements, such as a more aerodynamic design, improved engines, and a range of electronic systems.
