Parts for the E28 5 Series
The E28 is the second-generation 5 Series, built from 1981 to 1987. In South Africa it is remembered above all for the M5. CAR magazine records that local M5s were built at BMW's Rosslyn plant and came standard with a BMW Motorsport body kit and special cross-spoked 16-inch alloy wheels. When the E28 M5 appeared in CAR's August 1987 issue, it was the third-fastest car the magazine had ever tested.
The M5 engine
The E28 M5 used a double-overhead-cam 3.5-litre straight-six, codenamed M88/3, a version of the engine that powered the M1 supercar. It made 210 kW and 340 N.m. CAR lists forged pistons and model-specific connecting rods among the differences from the single-cam M535i, so internal engine parts from a standard six-cylinder are not a substitute. The everyday E28
Most E28s still on the road are not M5s. On a car approaching 40 years old, many have had parts changed over the years, so what is on the car may not be what left the factory. Photos of the old part, the engine bay and the identification plate help us match it.
E28 or E34?
Production of the E28 ended in 1987 and the E34 began in November 1987, so cars registered around 1987 and 1988 can be either. The shape tells you instantly, but if you are unsure, a photo of the car settles it before we quote.
