Parts for the first-generation X5

The E53 was the first BMW X5, built from September 1999 to September 2006 at BMW's plant in Spartanburg in the United States, not at Rosslyn. In South Africa it was sold with two six-cylinder engines, the 3.0i petrol and 3.0d diesel, and V8 petrol power in the 4.4i and later the 4.8iS.

Early or updated? Tell us the year

The X5 was thoroughly updated part-way through its life, and the change runs deeper than the new headlights. BMW South Africa's press material for the update lists three new engines: a new 4.4-litre V8 with VALVETRONIC (the engine BMW had already used in the 7 Series), an upgraded 3.0d with second-generation common-rail injection and 150 kW, and the 4.8-litre V8 of the 4.8iS. The update also brought the xDrive all-wheel-drive system, a new six-speed manual gearbox for the 3.0i and 3.0d, and a six-speed automatic as standard on the 4.4i.

So an early 4.4i and an updated 4.4i have different engines, and the drivetrain around them changed too. When you ask for an engine, gearbox, transfer case or anything in the cooling and fuel systems, give us the year and ideally the VIN, and we will match the part to your car rather than to the badge.

The rare one

The 4.8iS used a V8 that BMW says was developed exclusively for the X5, and it was priced at R748 000 when it arrived here in 2004. Because that engine was unique to the 4.8iS, say so clearly in your request if that is your car.

Cooling and service parts

Radiators were joint third on the list of BMW parts requested on this site in the 12 months to October 2026. If you are replacing one, read our guide to BMW water pump, thermostat and radiator repairs first.
