Parts for the F20 1 Series
The F20 is the second BMW 1 Series, built from September 2011 to May 2019 and the last of the rear-wheel-drive 1 Series hatchbacks. The F20 is the five-door; the F21 is the three-door, which cars.co.za says was dropped from the South African range at the 2016 update. According to the same SA buyer's guide, the F20 had arrived here by October 2011.
Same badge, different engine
This is the one to watch when you order engine parts. BMW changed engines under the same badges during the F20's life, and cars.co.za's guide lists the switches in South Africa:
- 118i: a 1.6-litre four-cylinder (the N13) at first, then a 1.5-litre three-cylinder B38 after the facelift, when the 116i fell away.
- 120d: moved from the N47 to the B47 diesel, rising to 140 kW.
- 125i: dropped its N20 for the B48 2.0-litre.
- M135i / M140i: the M135i used the N55 straight-six; the M140i that replaced it from July 2016 used the B58.
So a 2013 118i and a 2017 118i have different engines. Give us the year and, ideally, the VIN.
Known weak points
The guide advises listening for engine rattles on a pre-facelift 120d, because of the well-publicised timing-chain problems on the N47, and notes that the N20 in the earlier 125i was also known for timing-chain guide trouble. What are some common issues with the BMW 1 Series?
For the F20 generation (2011–2019), cars.co.za's South African buyer's guide highlights timing-chain problems on the N47 diesel in the pre-facelift 120d, and timing-chain guide trouble on the N20 petrol engine in the earlier 125i. It recommends listening for unusual rattling sounds when you inspect one. Later cars moved to the B47 diesel and B48 petrol engines.
