The BMW E12 is a compact executive car produced by the German automaker BMW between 1972 and 1981. It was the first generation of the BMW 5 Series and the first time that BMW used the “5 Series” nameplate. The E12 was available in sedan and coupe body styles and featured a range of inline-four and inline-six engines. The E28 succeeded the E12 in 1981, which represented the second generation of the 5 Series and was produced until 1988.
